allowable object ids

Turns out you can create objects with an id of . or .. although you can't access them. (which is to say I couldn't figure out how, though I didn't try ZServer standalone and I suppose apache might be doing something to the URI) You can't create objects with ids containing + or % or a host of other characters though (and btw the error message you get when you try is horrid, those characters are not illegal in URLs, illegal in the zope object model perhaps, but not URLs). zope book volunteering

I am incredibly happy to report that many folks are "signing up" to edits chapters of the Zope Book in preparation for the upcoming Zope 2.6.1 release! It's really beating the cynicism out of me! ;-) As a matter of fact, so many people are signing up that I'm getting *multiple* submissions of the same chapters! While this is a wonderful problem to have, I don't want folks to waste effort doing something that somebody else has already committed to. I have put up a page documenting signups and current status for the editing effort at http://www.zope.org/DocProjects/zope_book_signups/index_html . Hopefully this will serve as a place that I can keep track of who is doing what. Feedback wanted on Zope/CMF/Plone product developing - you might really want to read this;-)

Hi everyone, **READABILITY ALERT: text too long** **NEWBIE ALERT: New to Python/Zope/CMF/Plone. Please bear with my ignorance.** First, appologies sorry for cross postng, but I needed to access wider audience for feedback. I hope this will be my last shot at clearing up any doubts about the way I'm developing Zope/CMF/Plone products. Please enlighten me if I'm wrong. First, a bit of background why I'm posting this. I have a set of three products finished just a few hours ago: NeoBoard 1.1b1, NeoPortal Library, and NeoPortal Content Pak. NeoPortal Library NeoPortal Library is a collection of base modules on which to build sophisticated Zope/CMF/Plone products such as NeoBoard. NeoBoard NeoBoard is a threaded message board ( http://www.neoboard.net ). There's a HUGE gap between 1.0x versions and 1.1a, and another QUANTUM LEAP between the last 1.1a2 and soon-to-be-released 1.1b1. Most of its core features have been refactored into NeoPortal Library. NB supports stock Zope and CMF, and Plone. Works the same with or without CMF or Plone. NeoPortal Content Pak NeoPortal Content Pak is a collection of CMFPlone content types. It's dependent on Plone but I wouldn't call it Plone product since I don't fully follow the Plone developing guides. With NCP comes NeoPortal Document, NP File, NP Image, NP External File, NP Article, NP Link, NP Media, NP Container/Element pairs ( eg. NeoPortal Aritlce is a container and NeoPortal Page Element or Image Element type is an element ), plus all their advanced counterparts that offer additional features: DTML handling for example. As of 0.9a, NPC has 20 or so new content types and a couple of NeoPortal content-specific tools. NCP is an add-on to CMFPlone. Some common features include (every feature can be toggled on and off either in a site-wide or individual manner):: - backtalk like inline commenting ( factored out from NeoBoard ) - automatic conversion of textual notations into icons ( emoticons, for example ) - OLE-like object embedding ( one object can embed another; changes in embedded objects are automtically updated in embedding objects, etc ); even inline comments can embed and render other objects; NeoPortal object embedding follows the rules of acquisition - element-type-aware Containers like NeoPortal Article/Advanced Article ( automatic renumbering/navigation: you get your sequenceable photo albums in a second, for example ) - external data access ( External File and ExternalAccess tool - the tool supports filesystem access only as of 0.9a ; will support MySQL, etc; - a whole directory ( and its subdirectories ) of files on the server can be imported into corresponding NeoPortal External Files - individual content-rating and daily access logging ( IP-based and purgeable by specific interval of days ) - a new discussion tool for new content-types ( creates a NeoBoard instance when discussion is enabled ); you get everything NeoBoard offers for content discussion - site-wide configuration and instance-specific configuration that can override the former - togglable IP-based spam-blocking ( one can't comment on an article twice in less than 10 seconds, for example, to prevent malicious duplicate postings ).... to name a few (that's quite a few;-). NeoBoard comes with the same set of bells and whistles since it's basically a NeoPortal Element container and its articles/attachments are NeoPortal Elements, you get the idea. Need Your Help/Feedback Now here's what I'm not sure about. 1. Some fear granting users filesystem accesss is a real bad idea. You can specify file bases (/home/ZopeHome/archives, for example) NeoPortal External Files validate against given an absolute filepath at the time of their instantiatioin raising error if a user tries to go up the file bases. That's the solution I came up for filesystem security. NeoPortal Content Pak currently allows users with AddPortalContent permissions to use this mass-importing features from a given directory: one can FTP his files to one of the allowed directoy bases and import them into NeoPortal External Files in one go. If you import a set of images into a NeoPortal Article ( a NeoPortal container) , that is your auto-navigatable photo album, for example. In fact, I have tons of audio files that should be imported into my own Zope server to serve up our users. That's why I created the feature. Am I missing anything here? 2. The new discussion tool appends a acquisition-wrapped discussion board ( np_neoboard.__of__( self ) ) to instances as a normal property so that a board can be attachable to a non-folderish object (guess that's how it works with CMF anyway). Works just fine, but again... am I missing something? 3. Might be simple but haven't been able to find answers: how do I go about i18n'ing Zope internal messages like you do with ZPT's i18n tags? Every NeoPortal classes use a message-manipulating method to spew out warnings, errors, user messages, etc. The method just returns back the given messages as of now. I want this method to return i18n'd messages. Might be a stupid newbie question... but can you give me some pointers? 4. NeoPortal Library uses the 'email' package from Python 2.2. Just put the entire package into the NeoPortal Library package directory and it works just fine. I need this package to handle UNICODE mime headers. This is where my another python newbie question comes in: I have 'tests' directory under the NeoPortal directory: ./NeoPortalLibrary ./email ./tests NP_Mailer, a unicode-aware emailer class, works wonderfully but only the test modules in the 'tests' directory can't import email's Header class. I guess I'm pretty ignorant of python importing rules. If I move test modules into ./NeoPortalLibrary, all the tests go smoothly. I had to append 'Products.NeoPortalLibrary.email' to every import statement in the package. Please enlighten me on this one. 5. This might be a Plone-specific question but, Plone's master .po file has some multiline msgstr definitions that kill poEdit and Localizer when importing the file. For example: #: from plone_templates/sendto_template.pt msgid "mailtemplate_sendto_body" msgstr "This link is sent to you from ${portal_url}" " " "You are receiving this mail because someone read a page at" "${portal_title}" "and thought it might interest you." " " "It is sent by ${name} with the following comment:" "${comment}" " " "${document_title}" " " "${document_description}" " " "${document_url}" 6. One of the most difficult tasks I faced up to while developing Zope products is dealing with Zope security machinery. I use three computers when developing in Zope: a Linux server, a win2k where I write code with Manager role (everthing works security-wise), another win2k with Anonymous/Authenticated role. Also use the VerboseSecurity product to track down vague security errors. Any hints, tips or pitfalls or whatever would be greatly appreciated on this Zope security topic. In a word, how you guys test security handling of your products? And any ideas on testing it in unittests? 7. Access logging/readcounting would bloat ZODB unless version-less/non-undoable storages are used...right? How serious would it be if I use stock ZOPE filesystem storage? In my production envirionment, I have 300,000 users with tons of data. Any hints? How about the Directory Storage? 8. I defined a new set of formatting rules to render Structured Text. This might be a bad idea, but need these new rules for my users. Suppose you want to add a new rule to ST, how would you go about it? In my case, I just hacked it away:-( 9. I use 'guarded_getattr' instead of '_getViewFor' to get specific skins. For example, NeoBoard can work as a pure Zope product, in which case, I can't assume there'll be '_getViewFor'. Please warn me if I need additional 'guarding'. 10. I override the '_setObject' method in NeoPortalElementContainer class to allow id's that conform to a defined format: page_1, page_2, table_1, image_2 etc. Id validatioin can be skipped by setting 'no_id_check' argument and all. Element renumbering is done by calling 'resetElementNumbers' method, which, in turn, calls 'manage_renameObjects' for renumbering. I also override this 'manage_renameObjects' so that it calls '_setOb' instead of '_setObject'; otherwise I fall into a visious circle of '_setObject' calling 'resetElementNumbers' recursively. Anything I should be aware of in this regard? 11. FINALLY, NeoPortal Content Pak comes with two pairs of types: normal types for memebers and advanced types for Mangers/Reviewers. How do I filter out these content types based on permissions? I posted a question about this one a while ago, but none of the suggested solutions worked. Calling 'ContentInit' twice cancels out the first call, least in ZMI. Works okay in a CMF/Plone site. I also want Element types to appear only in a container object: page elements, image elemnts showing up only in an article container, for example. Can't find any solution for this. (Whew... are you still with me? God, thanks.) I plan to release NeoPortal Library, NeoBoard 1.1b1 and NeoPortal Content Pak by the end of this week unless I find **really serious** flaws thanks to YOUR feedback. Thanks in advance. AdaptableStorage status update

I've been holding off status updates on the AdaptableStorage project until I could say I'm confident that the approach will work and it's easy enough to write your own serialization components. After numerous refactorings, I'm pleased to say that it actually works and does everything I hoped! AdaptableStorage lets you store ZODB objects in your own database and in your format, *without* using special content classes. You can use a filesystem directory, a relational database, or whatever kind of database you might have as a ZODB. This is very different from all previous solutions. LocalFS, ExtFile, CMF directory views, and other similar products require you to use special content classes that store themselves outside the ZODB. OracleStorage and CVSFile store all objects as pickles. Other solutions have similar issues. AdaptableStorage, however, reuses as much of ZODB as possible to achieve orthogonal persistence to arbitrary databases and formats. This is only a status report, not an announcement that it's finished, so the documentation is not done yet. But there are interfaces, unit tests, and a basic diagram. You can use DBTab to mount an AdaptableStorage instance. As a test, I have successfully used AdaptableStorage to create a CMF site on both the filesystem and in a Postgres database. Here's a way to get a preview. (It may not work in MS Windows yet.) Get a very recent version of Zope 2.6 (or perhaps even the HEAD). Then check out AdaptableStorage and DBTab from CVS: cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@cvs.zope.org:/cvs-repository co Products/AdaptableStorage cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@cvs.zope.org:/cvs-repository co Products/DBTab Move the two products to the Products directory of your Zope instance. Create a dbtab.conf file in your <Zope> directory with the following: [Storage: FS] type=Zope2FSStorage basepath=%(CLIENT_HOME)s/myfs volatile=1 [Database: FS] class=Zope2FSDatabase mount_paths=/fs auto_create=1 Don't forget to create the directory "myfs" like this: mkdir var/myfs Start Zope and choose "Add DBTab Mount Point" in the management UI. You should get a checkbox next to the "/fs" mount. Create that mount point. Now visit /fs and add stuff. Watch var/myfs/fs, which will contain all the objects you create. You can't yet copy/paste, import, or export, but you can add just about any kind of object. The files under var/myfs/fs currently contain pickles, but that's only because AdaptableStorage doesn't have a mapper registered for most kinds of objects and it falls back to the default mappers. But AdaptableStorage does know about Folders and it creates a directory for them. It also works the other way around: if you create a directory on the filesystem, you'll see it in Zope as a Folder. If you're adventurous, you can also set up a SQL connection using psycopg and the following dbtab.conf entries: [Storage: Postgres] type=Zope2SQLStorage params= table_prefix=zodb volatile=1 [Database: Postgres] class=Zope2SQLDatabase mount_paths=/sql auto_create=1 You might observe that it's a little less responsive than regular ZODB. Edit dbtab.conf, changing "volatile=1" to "volatile=0", to get the full benefits of the ZODB cache. The downside is that changes you make on the filesystem won't be reflected immediately, but in a lot of environments, that is acceptable. The AdaptableStorage I presented at the O'Reilly Open Source conference was specific to Zope 2. This version is not. In fact, most of it isn't even specific to ZODB. Its core is a general serialization framework with pattern names drawn from Martin Fowler's book. Let me know if you run into troubles. I've been testing it with the Zope HEAD on Python 2.2.2. This is the product of many months of inspiration and perspiration. :-) It's not perfect, but the basic concepts and interfaces are in good shape. Comments welcome. Shane

ZODB3 3.1.1b1

We have made a beta release of ZODB 3.1.1 and ZEO 2.0.1. The primary change is a fix that allows transactions with multiple databases to run without deadlock. These release will correspond exactly to Zope 2.6.1b1, which will also be released today. See http://www.zope.org/Products/StandaloneZODB http://www.zope.org/Products/ZEO Zope developers who have written customer data managers (aka _p_jars) should be sure to test this release. The deadlock prevention code changes the order in which data managers are invokved and prevents new data managers from registering after a transaction has begun. I've include the summary of changes below. Jeremy What's new in ZODB3 3.1.1? ========================== Release date: 10-Dev-2002 It was possible for earlier versions of ZODB to deadlock when using multiple storages. If multiple transactions committed concurrently and both transactions involved two or more shared storages, deadlock was possible. This problem has been fixed by introducing a sortKey() method to the transaction and storage APIs that is used to define an ordering on transaction participants. This solution will prevent deadlocks provided that all transaction participants that use locks define a valid sortKey() method. A warning is raised if a participant does not define sortKey(). For backwards compatibility, BaseStorage provides a sortKey() that uses __name__. Added code to ThreadedAsync/LoopCallback.py to work around a bug in asyncore.py: a handled signal can cause unwanted reads to happen. A bug in FileStorage related to object uncreation was fixed. If an a transaction that created an object was undone, FileStorage could write a bogus data record header that could lead to strange errors if the object was loaded. An attempt to load an uncreated object now raises KeyError, as expected. The restore() implementation in FileStorage wrote incorrect backpointers for a few corner cases involving versions and undo. It also failed if the backpointer pointed to a record that was before the pack time. These specific bugs have been fixed and new test cases were added to cover them. A bug was fixed in conflict resolution that raised a NameError when a class involved in a conflict could not be loaded. The bug did not affect correctness, but prevent ZODB from caching the fact that the class was unloadable. A related bug prevented spurious AttributeErrors when a class could not be loaded. It was also fixed. The script Tools/zeopack.py was fixed to work with ZEO 2. It was untested and had two silly bugs. Some C extensions included standard header files before including Python.h, which is not allowed. They now include Python.h first, which eliminates compiler warnings in certain configurations. ZEO 2.0.1 (2002/12/10) The changes since the ZEO 2.0 release are: - The logging code for client connection was improved in several ways. In particular, client connection and disconnection messages include the server's address. - ClientCache.py: make some functions into methods; include the storage name in all log messages; append the storage name to the trace filename. - zrpc/trigger.py: in handle_read() (both versions!), catch socket errors from the recv() call and return early in that case.

python 2.1.3 on RedHat 8.0

I am working on spec/RPM for Zope 2.6.x, but obviously a working python2.1.3 install is a pre-req if I want to support RH8.0 with the Zope RPMS :-) Attached are the changes made to the spec so that the python 2.1.3 SRPM from python.org would --rebuild nicely on RedHat 8.0 Changes: Made tools optional Used "%{__prefix}/lib/python2.1/Tools" instead of tools.files for "tools" sub-package. Removed BuildPrereq for db1-devel. No longer included in RH8 (see: http://www.redhat.com/software/linux/technical/packages.html) I don't have a RH7.x box to test on anymore.. Attempt to store an object from a foreign database connection?

Hi All! My situation is this: When creating CPS sites I sometimes see one of the tracebacks appended below. In its factory method (manage_addCPSSite) CPS creates two External Methods (cpsinstall & cpsupdate) inside a fresh CMF portal, and then executes these. During execution cpsupdate imports some components from .zexp files into portal tools. What does it mean when "the connection" is "closed"? Where does the "foreign database connection" come from in the first place? Is it probably not a good idea to run External Methods from inside a factory method? I can not all too reliably reproduce this but what I do is constantly create and delete CPS sites as I am customizing the mentioned External Methods. I also noticed that after a restart it works for a while, and then suddenly starts bombing out (after approx. 2 minutes). Once it is broken the error persists and I have to restart to be able to add a CPS site again.
