I'm getting a bit suspicious about the number of times Netscape and Zope aren't playing together for me :-S
Basically, on my desktop machine (WinNT 4, Netscape 4.74) I can't actually submit to any Zope sites. I click a form button but the browser just sits there with the N spinning and not doing anything.
I thought that was just my machine, but now on this laptop (Win2000, Netscape 4.74) the same thing is happening. I'm also getting the problem wit hthe browser constantly redirecting in a very short loop. IIRC, this is 'cos it's trying to get a linked stylesheet where Netscape has a bug, so I disabled sylesheets in my management options, but I still get exactly the same problem :-(
Has anyone else experienced any of the above and does anyone have any solutions?
In my experience, this a a pure client-side bogosity. To verify: try blowing away all the 'nsform*' and 'formpost*' files in your "C:\windows\temp" directory; if the problem clears up, make an effigy of Mark Andreesen, abuse it creatively, and call me in the morning. :)

Well, this appears to have helped a bit. I don't seem to end up CSS-spinning on management screens but I don't think that's related.
It appears I can submit forms too (yay!) but its still painfully slow (much slower than it was when I first installed Netscape) COuld that be because I'm working offline and some weird DNS lookup thing is happening or is it still a manifestation of the same problem?
Out of interest, what is the problem that is solved by deleting the above files?
cheers,
Chris

Won't help other NS users, though - how would they know to do this?

Could be. Another factor in NS problems (maybe not in this particular quirk) is that NS really wants to go to its cache, even when you try to tell it not to. Sometimes the only remedy is to shut NS down and restart, or even in extremis to flush the cache. I've been bit by this too many times.

Wow... thanks for that. I can use Netscape on my desktop machien again. Completely unbelievable, but such is the world of closed source software :-(
So, where can I find Mr Andreesen, and why does he particularly need to die?

He is the founder of Netscape; I'm guessing he has laughed all the way to the bank and beyond by now.

Netscape browsers are an excellent tool for debugging html. If it doesnt display, then there is something wrong.
Netscape 6 is a monstrous beast, so I will reserve any further judgement until its properly released, but 4.7, does indeed give you that love/hate feeling.
But hmmmm, I haven't seen Netscape doing anything with open license agreements and forcing corporate accounts to upgrade to newer, buggier software before they loose certain priviledges. I think the hitman should be money well spent elsewhere.... Perhaps Bill Gates' personal marketing team....

I agree with Paz on this one. I would also like to point out that Netscape has been based on the work that the guys at Mozilla have been doing for some time. Can we say Open Source project? I think Paz just said that in his round about way.
This is where the 6.X browser comes from also. (one reason it is so bloated right now) It is not even based on a final build... 0.9 was release May 7, 2001

Well, I'm finally giving Mozilla a go. 0.9.1 downloaded and unpacked (where's my Windows installer?! :-S)
Jeez, their community stuff isn't as friendly or easy to get into as Zope's :-S
I'm having lots of fun (not!) with their mail client. Anyone here well versed with it on Windows?
cheers,
Chris

I use 0.9 for a week at home. It works for me and my family. I am waiting for 0.9.2.

The windows installer is linked to on the front page for the mozilla project. If you can't find it still look at http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla0.9.1/mozilla-win32-0.9.1...
Took about 20 seconds to find that link.
As far as the other stuff I can't really say how well it works since I have no windows boxes and won't have any and detest the graphical email clients.

I am much more open about this I wish both microsoft and netscape would burn eternaly for their contributions to the "browser wars". Neither one of them made a browser that works worth a damn. We have netscape which doesn't render a bunch of things but gets caching mostly right, we have IE that lies in the REQUEST, violates the HTTP/1.1 spec, caches stuff it has been told not to cache etc. At then end of the day I feel like nuking both of them and a few other browsers also.

Hmm, can agree with that, but its the public masses that seed standardization... How many people in the 80's actually payed attention to the fact that Beta was and still IS a better standard than VHS video tapes... Even the same for 8-track cassette... Its near DAT qaulity, although the iron oxides used were much cruder than today's norm.
Its more about the user's picking something up without having to know anything about it, rather than the developers who use it more intimate ways.... Thus is life in a capitalist world.
