I bet it went more like this: RH-based distros use Python for a lot  
of their internal tools and scripts. That's what they care about. So  
if they want some new feature for those applications they will move  
the Python that comes with the distribution to whatever release they  
want, and everyone else be damned. Or to put it more precisely,  
everyone who isn't prepared to make that jump with them be damned.
