Do you know if there would be any plans to implement this type of
functionality within the portal_memberdata, perhaps something like a
workflow/associations, or have I missed the point somewhere?

What I mean by associations is to allow in the meta-types to specify which
users are able to work with these objects.

You can only do this messilly right now by fiddling with the view permission
on
the Type objects in the PortalTypes tool :-(

So, News_Editor would onyl have the view permission of the NewsItems Type
object.
