The WebText class inside the CMFCollector does URL recognition in plain
text;  you could probably lift code from there:

  http://cvs.zope.org/CMF/CMFCollector/WebTextDocument.py

which uses the 'format_webtext' function from:

  http://cvs.zope.org/CMF/CMFCollector/util.py
