You know what would be really cool in CMF?  Being able to use email
addresses as usernames.

I don't know whether that's been proposed, but I understand why it currently
doesn't work:  The userid has to be part of a valid url.

Email addresses make the most natural usernames.  You get to just skip that
whole silly dance that goes like this:

  System:  Pick a username.
  User:  How about, 'bob'?
  System:  That's taken, try again...
  ...
  User:  How about, 'bob904567'?
  System:  OK
