This fear is unjustified (as Michael already pointed out).

  MVCC will avoid read conflicts at the cost of additional
  write conflicts.

  This additional write conflicts will make the UID generation
  safe (unless prevented by an application specific conflict
  resolution, as for "BTrees.Length").
