Thanks. I actually found what I was looking for. On line 158 of TreeTag.py is
the following code:

String.commands['tree']=Tree

...which hooks TreeTag into the DTML machinery. This is pretty cool. You could
actually build a product that adds an extension to dtml without having to modify
any of the document template code.

I guess I should have asked what I really wanted to know, which is how to create
an object that works with the tree tag without subclassing ObjectManager. I
figured it out, though. Think I'll go write a how-to! =)
