I don't want to diss lxml, but since it's not in the standard library,  
I imagine far more people use element tree.

I don't.  I don't do much with xml. If I did, I might use it more.  I  
see no reason for a web framework to be all tied up with xml.  I  
wouldn't mind lxml if it wasn't so hard to install.
