i changed the search script to search for 'portal_type' instead of 
'meta_type'.

this increases search result volume by 0-10 times.
the drawback is, that HowTos exist in 2 object versions (they old HowTos 
have not been migrated - zope.org collector #151, the new HowTos are 
CMFDocuments) and old HowTos are not found after the change to the 
search script.

do you know of any other object types that exist in different versions ?
