[Zope] Packing ...error and read-only mode

Zope 1.90 on Linux RH 5.2 Base installation
Had been "up" for almost 6 days.

In the process of editing an index_html page there was
an apparent time out that would not let me save "Change".
(when using IE4/PC to LAN to Zope/Linux)

Thinking there was a problem with the database,
I tried to Pack it (older than 0 days) and received a:

"Sorry, an error occurred."

I went back to work on the index_html and again tried to
save but got this:

"Attempt to perform a write operation
while the database is in read-only mode. "

Using the control panel "shutdown" didn't help.
I then went to the Linux and did a ./stop ./start
and all is well. I still can't pack the database even
though I can continue editing.

I assume that the pack routine is getting stuck and
leaving the database in the read-only mode.

*Where do I look for the source of the pack problem?

*I'm concerned about data integrity:
  Do ../var/data.bbb files become corrupted?
If so, are there tools to fix it?
(bob is still thinking *.dbf tables)
How does one "Browse" or View the data.bbb file?

Thanks in advance for helping a newbee. Of course
feel free to point me to the FMs (Fine Manuals!)
