My rewrite rule that *does* work

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*)
RewriteRule ^/(.*) /home/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/$1 
[e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l]

Don't know. I'm using Apache 1.3.6 and that *is* compatible. It seems 
that 1.3.4 is compatible too (see below).

Latest version is Zope-1.10.2
You could try downloading the ZAP distribution (includes Apache 
1.3.4) from www.zope.org and try that out:
