Duh.. Well answering my own previous question =>

The meta_type is 'External Method'

Apologies. 
My DMTL was blind because it was only looking for 'External Method' objects
with titles:

changing <dtml-var title> to <dtml-var title_or_id> fixed this fast :-)

Obvious lesson here - syntax=ok, dtml=ok, human=assumption_error
