Whoops, had my logic a little misarranged.  Try this instead (now with
annotations!) :

    Don't redirect existing objects
  <dtml-else>
    Everything else goes to 'artists'
    <dtml-call expr="path.append('artists')">
    <dtml-call expr="REQUEST.set('SiteRootPATH', '/')">
  </dtml-if>
</dtml-if>
</dtml-let>
