Tom,

oracle privileges + roles = bleuch!

so you can do a select so long as it doesn't use a built-in function? 
seems a bit odd to me, but luckily i'm a not an oracle dba either...

i'm not connected to an oracle box at the minute but doesn't the 
"normal" ("_.str()") string conversion stuff work?
