Thanks for the help, after seeing the first response I took a look at the book and sure enough, no colon. I had just copied and pasted without really checking the function.

You're missing a colon, and so is the book (I just fixed it in the
source).  It should be:

  def hello(name='world'):
      return "Hello %s" % name
