I can tell you my personal experience:

I found Zope for chanche, had no clue about Python, read the Python tutorial, read the Zope book, in two afternoons I wrote a simple agenda application, tested XML in another afternoon, and while munching my sandwich I got interfaced to java, scrambled with perl and I was hacking my Oracle instance like I always used zope.....   

I am sorry you missed the Zope book, but I wouldn't say that zope is difficult to learn....it is true however that for advanced tricks the documentation is lacking, but I have just watched this list and always found answers to my questions even without posting....

So now I give up. I'm going to install apache (`apt-get install
apache'), and use the Python bsddb module for a simple dict-like
database.
