If you haven't already, you might want to take a look at Photo
(http://www.zope.org/Members/rbickers/Photo) instead, since ZPhotoAlbum is
no longer being maintained.

This won't help your PIL install problem unless you choose to use
ImageMagick with Photo instead, which currently produces much better
thumbnails anyway.
