Did you *recursively* give user 'zope' rx permissions on your Zope dir
and *all* below it, and rwx privs on the /zope_dir/var directory?

$ cd /zope_dir
$ chown -R zope .
$ chmod -R u+rx .
$ chmod -R u+rwx var
