Yes and no.

Here are some java skills that can be applied to zope :
    o   understanding OO design
    o   understanding distributed objects
        (zope is like j2ee except it is comprehensible to and usable
        by mere mortals)
    o   basic CS/programming concepts and abilities

Some java skills that are not easily applied to zope, but can be done
with some effort :
    o   use of the standard java libraries
    o   use of other java libraries
