We've used DirectoryStorage on UFS+softupdates for a year now, and have 
10+ GB on it.  Works great.  I think reisferfs is what Toby recommends 
for it, so you should be OK.  You can mitigate the slower speed somewhat 
by using ZEO and a persistent ZEO client cache.
