Yeah but to turn XML into text / pdf / whatever there's XSLT, or at
worse a module that does the XML parsing + text generation. So basically
if you produce standard XML then you can pipeline it into existing XML
transformation tools, and that in itself can save you a lot of work.

I think that with the event of XML the days of BASIC looking-like
templating systems are numbered, so you might want to avoid using them.
Still, it is nice to have a system that is backwards-compatible :)
