I tried and it did (i.e. "<!DOCTYPE" at the immediate start of the page)...

Maybe, your mail reader was too intelligent and
reformatted my code. The reformatting almost surely
added whitespace before the "<!DOCTYPE" and maybe (if it is
especially stupid) a line break.
